In June 2005, Cara and her current all-female band, Hot Caramel, performed “Flashdance (What a Feeling)” and a cover of Anastacia’s song “I’m Outta Love” to win the third round of NBC’s Hit Me, Baby, One More Time.

At the 2006 AFL Grand Final in Melbourne, Cara gave a performance of “Flashdance (What a Feeling)” as part of the pre-game show.

Her professional singing and dancing career began on Spanish-language television. She debuted on The Original Amateur Hour and Johnny Carson’s The Tonight Show.

As a member of the show’s band, The Short Circus, she was a regular on PBS’s educational program The Electric Company. Cara recorded a Latin-market Spanish-language record and an English-language Christmas album as a child. She also performed in a major tribute to Duke Ellington, alongside Stevie Wonder, Sammy Davis Jr., and Roberta Flack.

Cara appeared in several Broadway and off-Broadway productions, including Ain’t Misbehavin’, The Me Nobody Knows, Maggie Flynn opposite Shirley Jones and Jack Cassidy, and Via Galactica with Ral Juliá.

Cara played Daisy Allen in the 1970s daytime drama Love of Life. Following her portrayal of Angela in the romance/thriller Aaron Loves Angela, she portrayed the title character in Sparkle.

Cara received international acclaim for her performances in two outstanding mini-series, Roots: The Next Generations and Guyana Tragedy: The Story of Jim Jones, on television. Screen World, Vol. 28, named her one of twelve “Promising New Actors of 1976,” and a Right On! magazine readers’ poll named her Top Actress that same year.
