Robert Volk Died From Cancer, BU Law, Professor of Boston University

Following a quick but challenging cancer treatment, Robert Volk (’78), who taught legal writing and oversaw the Lawyering and Advocacy Programs for more than 40 years, passed suddenly.

His guidance assisted countless BU Law students in developing the research, writing, and advocacy skills that are essential to the practice of law. He was a devoted teacher and mentor.

Perhaps more importantly, he demonstrated to law students that there is room for everyone in the legal profession as a gay guy and first-generation high school graduate.

According to Jennifer Taylor McCloskey (’05), director of advocacy programs, who started working with Professor Volk in 2008, “Robert loved teaching and liked being a vital part of every first-year student’s experience.”

.”

Volk dedicatedly and humorously served the Boston University community for more than 40 years. Volk oversaw the growth of the First Year Writing Program,

formerly known as the Lawyering and Advocacy Programs, from a team of 25 to 30 adjunct faculty who taught legal writing once a week to a strong Lawyering Program, launched in fall 2017, with seven full-time faculty members and more course time to teach legal research and writing, client interviews, oral advocacy, and more.
